Care of Diabetes: Whose Responsibility?

چکیده
SIR,-Many of the criticisms that Dr Jules Older levels against religious fundamentalists are undoubtedly justified (17 November, p 1359). He does, however, appear to run the risk of throwing out the baby with the bath water. Excessive and often misguided zeal is a characteristic of youth, and this is often accompanied by a narrow perspective of life, which is unduly critical of the views of others. Nevertheless, basic beliefs sincerely held profoundly influence the building of character. Behaviour cannot be separated from belief. Experience is consistent with the biblical emphasis that it is the heart of man that controls his thinking and decision making, which in turn prompts words and actions. To reject the Christian faith because of the actions of those who have misunderstood and misused it, as in the case of the Inquisition, or because of hurtful and improper behaviour on the part of some believers is surely tantamount to mistrusting currency notes because some fakes have been discovered. Our profession would be infinitely the poorer without the numerous dedicated Christian doctors in all its branches whose faith was nurtured in medical school Christian Unions. Moreover, the incalculable influence of medical missions throughout the world stems from men and women whose Christian convictions, often strengthened through contact with other Christians in medical school, have been the guiding force behind all their endeavours. Although much more tolerant now than I was as a medical student, I am grateful for zealous companions who influenced me in those far off days. DENIs BURKITT Bussage, Stroud, Gloucestershire GL6 8AX
